Happy Healthy Mommy, Happy Healthy Baby

sign for the perinatal project next to flowersIf you’re a new mom and you’re struggling, you are not alone. Up to 20% of new mothers suffer from perinatal or postpartum depression.

Normal baby blues will subside within one to two weeks, and this affects 80% of new mothers. Many women cry easily or feel stressed following the birth of a baby. However, some women experience a more intense sadness that doesn’t go away. If this lasts for more than a couple of weeks, you may have postpartum depression. Symptoms of perinatal depression or postpartum depression can occur any time during pregnancy or after delivery and last from a few weeks to a year.

Other Perinatal Mental Health Concerns

Perinatal mental health concerns extend past depression and other mood disorders. Surrounding the perinatal period, individuals can experience increases in anxiety and psychotic symptoms as well. Obsessive-compulsive symptoms and traumatic stress responses are also possible. The changes in hormones and life events that occur during this period can lead to a variety of symptoms, all of which are manageable with proper support. Our teams can help to assess these symptoms as they arise and change throughout this period of change and can support a return to well-being.
